Adjacent to the close area of Nagarhole and Bandipore of Karnataka and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu lies the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is an extended area of a cultivated land that is 15 Kms from Calicut and it falls into two distinct areas. One in Kozhikode and the other in the district of Kannur. Wayanad means the land of swamps. The Wildlife Sanctuary was established with the main objective of preserving the biological heritage of the region and has rich bio-diversity and is a part of Nilgiri biosphere reserve.

The sanctuary has the best deciduous teak forests and marshes which are totally covered by bamboo and other grasses. These forests are covered extensively in the Indian Peninsula.

Main Places of Visit in the Wayanad The sanctuary which is covered with fauna and flora is spread over 345 sq km and is covered under the Project Elephant. You can find elephants and tigers freely roaming. You can also find various species of deer, monkeys, and birds living here. A drive along the road to Muthanga, gives a chance to view these beasts. Elephant rides are arranged by Forest Department.

On touring the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, you can visit the Chembra Peak which is the highest peak in the sanctuary and is the great place for trekking. Other tourist spots include Edakkal Caves where interesting carvings are on the walls of the caves which has human and animal figures, Kuruva Island, Pookat Lake and Sentinel Rock waterfalls. Elephant rides are enjoyed by the visitors in the rich surroundings of the sanctuary.

How To Reach There The nearest railway station is at Calicut which is 100km away from Wayanad sanctuary. Cochin which is 215 kms away is the nearest airport from the sanctuary. Calicut connects to all major Indian cities and places in the Middle East through continuous flights.
