In 1498, the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama arrived in Kappad Beach, near Kozhikode. When the British became an important trading power here, Kozhikode Backwaters later named as Calicut turned into a foremost trading outpost for the British. The most popular export item here is the local made checked cloth called Calico.

In the bygone era, Kozhikode served as the capital of the powerful Zamorins. It is also an important trade and commerce center and also the venue of the Malabar Mahotsavam. Today, this district has become an important tourist location because of its immense natural beauty which is very evident in its beautiful countryside greenery, heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries, beautiful rivers and majestic hills. Tourist Attractions Kadalundi This is a lovely bird sanctuary which attracts thousands of tourists every year. It is located 25 kilometers from Kozhikode and is an excellent habitat for water birds. There are many exotic birds found here such as herons, gulls, terns and sandpipers. The ideal time to come here is from the months of November and April.

Art Gallery The Art Gallery has a wonderful collection of paintings from famous painters such as Raja Ravi Varma and his brother Raja Raja Varma of Kerala. It is situated in close proximity to the Pazhassirajah Museum.
